Luxury Resort
Captured on the island’s northwestern tip of Laem Yai Bay on one of the prettiest hillside settings of any Samui property, Four Seasons is one of the more established resort names in an area that has been infiltrated by Banyon Tree, Six Senses and ever-evolving condo-based resorts. Suspended in a series of bungalow-style tree houses facing the Gulf of Siam, an impressive thatch-roof lobby composed of locally made furnishings of natural woods in minimalist shapes face a dramatic ocean landscape of blue sea. The landscape of tropical jungles descends rather dramatically onto a private beach with offshore reef and lounger service ubiquitous to the chain.

The hotel is home to a collection of resort eateries that rarely rise above your usual, however quite delicious, Four Seasons cuisine. Perched at the top of the property, Lan Tania is the more formal of the hotel’s eateries that includes a beach cafe and bar. Thatch A-frame roof and teak wood floors with terrazzo accents include a dressier lounge and dinnertime menu of seafood, barbecues and vegetarian. The crowd, however much we love our fellow-Americans, is in fact far too American with heavy contingent of chatty honeymooners with endless wedding stories. The in-house spa includes a beginner level yoga pavilion and pricey selection of body treatments that are not quite as good as its Six Senses competition.
The Room
Key West meets Balinese chic in a series of standard, deluxe and premier one-bedroom villas contained within freestanding bungalows that dot this Laem Yai hillside. More luxurious and better maintained than the Banyan Tree rooms, cushy luxury is opted over sparse minimalism in gleaming lounge spaces with dramatic teak windows opening to massive balconies with day bes and dining table conducive to sunset bottles of wine. Bathrooms feature double vanity basin sinks and floating bathtubs with their own sea views. Closer to the beach on the lower, better, edge of the property is a series of beach villas featuring more of a cabana atmosphere with their own private plunge pools with larger outdoor areas and easier access to the shore. Larger families should look into the Residence Villas with massive 3000-sqaure foot spaces offering full-furnished kitchens and larger infinity pools.
